Philipp and I love pizza. Everywhere we go we try different establishments to find the local favorite. Well, we were surprised to find one of our favorites in Vietnam. We were lucky to get to meet the owner and find out how she got started making pizza. I usually don’t blog about a restaurant, but I wanted to give this women’s business in Vietnam a shout out.
Vy Nguyen, the owner of “pizza & Bia” pizzeria, opened up shop a couple of years ago.
She explained she always loved cooking with her mother and helping her make meals for the family since she was a young girl. She treasured the time she spent with her mother in the kitchen and the skills she taught her. After traveling to Italy, she noticed the similarity between the two cultures valuing food and family.
At that time, she was determined to return to Vietnam and open her own pizzeria. A few months later, she traveled back to Italy to become a qualified pizzaiola to bring her skills back home to Vietnam. Like many businesses, when you get started, it can be a rocky road. Her family stuck by her side to help her keep the doors open in her first year of business and make her dream come to life. She trained her brother to make quality pizza also. He still works by her side and helps train others aspiring to become qualified pizzaiola.
They break some Italian rules with their New York-style toppings and her unique Vietnamese pizza like her Saigon heat pizza, Banh Mi Pizza, and the Fisherman pizza. She wanted to bring her culture into this pizzeria parlor. They also serve a variety of Vietnamese Bia (Beer) and have two different beers on tap which makes this place, if you like beer with your pizza (who doesn’t?) That said she stuck to the tradition she learned in Italy about getting the two essentials right: The craftsmanship and care that goes into good Italian dough and the simplicity that makes a great tasting pizza sauce.
Vy is succeeding because of her dedication, hard work, and support of her family, not to mention the great pizza. Today her place is full of customers enjoying the delicious pizza they serve at Pizza & Bia – Way to go Vy!!
If you are in Ho Chi Minh City and need a pizza fix, this is the place you must go. You will love her staff, her pizza, and the bia (beer). Thank you, Vy, for the perfect pizza and the lovely times we had at your place while we were in Ho Chi Minh City. You can find Pizza & Bia at 193 Điện Biên Phủ, Phường 6, Quận 3, Hồ Chí Minh.
